Bassinet sheets and crib sheets are often shelved together, which makes them look interchangeable. They are not. The mattresses differ by more than half a metre in length, and the sheets are cut accordingly.
The size gap is larger than it looks
A standard crib mattress is 28 x 52 inches. A standard bassinet mattress is closer to 33 x 17 inches (84 x 43 cm). Put a crib sheet on a bassinet and you are left with a great deal of loose fabric with nowhere to go, which is the opposite of what you want in a sleep space.
The depth differs too. Bassinet mattresses are thin, typically around 4 inches (10 cm), so a sheet cut with deep crib-style sides will bunch underneath rather than pull taut.
Bassinets are not one shape
Cribs are standardised. Bassinets are not. You will find oval, rectangular, hourglass and small rectangular bases across different brands, and a sheet that fits one shape may sit awkwardly on another.
This is where fully elasticated edges earn their place. Elastic all the way round lets one sheet adapt to several base shapes, where corner-only elastic only works on the shape it was cut for. Our Organic Muslin Bassinet Sheets are fully elasticated for that reason.
What to check before you buy
- Measure the mattress, not the bassinet. The outer frame tells you nothing useful.
- Check mattress thickness. Anything up to about 4 inches is typical.
- Look for all-round elastic if your base is not a plain rectangle.
- Check the fabric certification. Ours are Oeko-Tex certified, meaning the textile has been tested for substances of concern.
Why muslin suits the bassinet stage
Bassinets are used in the first months, when changes are frequent and laundry is constant. Muslin's open weave dries quickly and softens with washing, which matters more here than at any later stage.
It is also light. A thin, breathable sheet is easier to fit on a small mattress than a heavy jersey one, and less likely to leave folds.
Two sheets, not one
In the bassinet months, a single sheet is not enough. Our bassinet sheets ship as a two-pack so there is always a clean one ready while the other is in the wash.
