Crib Sheet Sizes and Fitted Depth: A 2026 Buying Guide

Most crib sheet problems are sizing problems. Here is how to read the two measurements that decide whether a sheet actually stays on.

Organic Muslin Crib Sheets, 2-Pack

A fitted crib sheet is one of the few baby products where the specification matters more than the styling. A sheet that is slightly too small will pop off a corner in the night. A sheet that is too shallow will not clear the mattress at all. Both are sizing problems, and both are avoidable if you check two numbers before buying.

The first number: mattress footprint

A standard full-size crib mattress in the US measures 28 x 52 inches (71 x 132 cm). That dimension is set by regulation rather than by brand, which is why a sheet cut for a standard crib fits almost every standard crib on the market.

Where people get caught out is assuming all baby mattresses are standard. Mini cribs, bassinets and playards are all smaller, and all different from one another. A standard crib sheet will not fit any of them properly, and stretching one to try is worse than using nothing, because the excess fabric has to go somewhere.

The second number: fitted depth

Fitted depth is the height of the sheet's sides, and it is the measurement most listings leave out. It tells you the thickest mattress the sheet will go over and still tuck underneath.

Crib mattresses are commonly 4 to 6 inches thick, but waterproof covers, mattress protectors and dual-firmness designs all add height. A sheet with shallow sides may fit a bare mattress and then fail once a protector goes on.

Our Organic Muslin Crib Sheets are cut 28 x 52 inches with 8 inches (20 cm) of fitted depth, which leaves room for a protector without the corners riding up.

Why elastic placement matters more than elastic strength

A sheet with elastic only at the corners relies on four points of tension. A sheet elasticated all the way around pulls evenly along every edge, which is what keeps it flat when a baby pushes against it.

This is the difference you feel at 3am. All-round elastic is harder to stretch onto the mattress the first time and much less likely to let go later.

Fabric: what muslin actually does

Muslin is a loose, open weave. The practical consequences are that it breathes well, it dries quickly after a wash, and it softens rather than stiffens over time. It is not a thick or plush fabric, and it is not meant to be.

If you want a sheet that gets more comfortable through repeated washing rather than less, an open weave in organic cotton is a sensible place to start.

Why two sheets is the realistic minimum

Cribs get stripped at inconvenient hours. One sheet means washing and waiting; two means changing the bed and dealing with the laundry later. Our crib sheets ship as a two-pack for exactly that reason.

A short checklist

  • Measure your mattress rather than assuming it is standard.
  • Check the fitted depth, not just the length and width.
  • Add the thickness of any protector you use.
  • Prefer elastic that runs all the way round.
  • Buy at least two so one can always be in the wash.
